Home Tour

Early this year, I ended up moving from a high rise apartment on the main street of my city to a carriage house located in one of its quiet neighbourhoods. The reason for my move was not ideal and I had to leave immediately, so needless to say when I found this stand alone above garage suite with vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors, I jumped at it. Luck was on my side (it has to be in this market) and here we are!

Here, I’m living out all my cozy home fantasies, and LOVING IT. I’ve always seen myself in a little house like this, with some character and views of trees and mountains outside. Coming from a city apartment, it’s so clear how right this is for me. Neighbours I don’t feel weird talking to, nature trails nearby to roam with Ferris- I can hear frogs at night!

I’ve made a home here. The first one that really feels like mine. So come along and I’ll walk you through…

Entryway

This is what you see when you reach the top of the stairs. I keep my yoga gear here and a couple guitars, which are peppered throughout the house- always an arm’s reach away.

First Nook

The first nook (aka the chill zone) is where I keep my papasan chair, which is pretty much the hippie/single living equivalent to a couch.

Journals

I’ve been keeping journals since I could write. These ones are from when I was 17. I wrote an entry everyday for my last year of high school.

Entering the main part of the house, you can see my music corner in the second nook.

Recording Nook

I decided to make the nookiest nook in the house designated to recording and music making. I love getting lost in a tiny space.

Songbooks

This is my first place where I’ve successfully put up shelves and I’m low key VERY PROUD of it. On this one I keep music stuff. My lyric books from high school and up are chillin’ in between the plants.

Living Room

As you can see, I have an eclectic selection of seating options. That’s because my spaces are always on the small side, so you’ve got to be creative. Ferris has taken to the chair under the window, to look out of it, as dogs do.

This plant has come with me all the way from the first suite I had at my parents’ place. It grows new leaves often… I’m honestly a little scared at how big it might get.

Kitchen and etc!

The main part of the house is quite multi-purposeful. It’s got the kitchen (definitely one of the nicest I’ve had), the ‘living space,’ if you want to call it that, and also the last little nooky-type area that I made into my work space.

Not exactly a nook, but close (and cute) enough.

Workspace

Simple, but functional. Not gonna lie- I don’t always do work here, but when I do, it means I’m for real focusing! I mostly use this space when I’m physically writing or taking notes. Also, you can see another shelf I put up! Perfect for camera gear.

Bathroom

My last apartment didn’t have natural light for about half of the space, so I am SO happy to have windows in every room here- including the bathroom! Makes such a difference.

I strung my plant light curtain over the bathroom mirror, which is my favourite part of the room.

Bedroom

It took me so long so settle into this bedroom because the walls and the floor are this dark green, which made the room seem so dark most of the time. But bringing in the white and cream bedding and rug really brightened everything up.

I’ve accrued a solid amount of instant photos and brought some good ones out to place here and there.

I keep sunglasses, headphones and lip balm on this hanging macrame shelf above my stairs so I don’t forget to grab what I need on my way out.

There you have it! My current home situation, one that I’m hoping will be long term. From its little corners, to the natural light it gets coming in every direction… It kind of felt like I ended up here by accident, and it was from a small series of coincidences. Sometimes though, you don’t know what you need in your life until you have it, and then you realize how much better you are because of it. And yes, this is just a house. But it’s also a lifestyle change, a change of pace, that I’m glad came for me.
